A Note from the Photographer
B & G had a clear vision for their big day: they wanted it to be a celebration *a party* with their closest friends and family. They wanted their wedding photos to be all candid moments and memories. They did not want to pose, and they wanted their bridal party and immediate family there every step of the way, including during the first look.
They chose to share that intimate moment with them and the reactions of their loved ones added an extra layer of emotion (cue loud cheers) to their own (cue pure joy and happy tears).
The engagement shoot we did beforehand was a perfect preview of what was to come on their wedding day. It was upbeat, fun, candid and adventurous, and they totally committed to whatever I threw at them. Their wedding was just that — it was all about having fun, creating memories, going with the flow, and embracing the moment.
Why did you request no formal portraits on your wedding day and that all of the photos be candid instead?
“The most important reason that comes to mind is that we wanted our photos to really reflect our day. We couldn’t be with everyone all the time so we wanted to see photos that captured what we couldn’t see.
Another big reason is that we wanted to enjoy every second of the day with our friends and family. We didn’t want to have to sneak off anywhere to take photos when the moments we wanted to capture most were the ones with everybody.”

Where did the idea of your theme “Wed in the West” come from?
“Moving West from Toronto we had almost all of our guests make the trip out, so we really just wanted to get everyone excited to come out here.
A trip out West is usually on everyone’s bucket list at some point but tickets can be pricey and life can get busy so we wanted to use our wedding as something for more than just us. We wanted everyone who could make the trip to be excited about finally making the journey West to beautiful Alberta.”

What made you pick Two House Brewery for your venue?
“The moment we first walked into Two House, we knew it was perfect for us. The food, the building, the staff — everything was so perfect for us because we wanted our wedding to be as laid back as we are.
Our friends and family were already doing us a huge favour coming out here for our special day so we wanted to take all of the pressure out of the typical “wedding day”. Two House is so comfortable that when our guests came in they felt they could let their hair down — kick back, enjoy some pizza, have some Calgary brewed beers (with heavy pours) and see downtown as we do all the time. They could feel comfortable and let loose.”

What was your favourite part of your wedding day — if you can even pick one?
“It was definitely the energy. Like we mentioned, it was so laid back and we knew that everyone felt the same. The focus was just on fun.
Also everyone that helped us on our day; we couldn’t have asked for more. Our officiant Pam, who squeezed us in between weddings that day; the staff at Two House and Acme Pizza owner Jason, who worked with us the whole way, delivered AMAZING food and was always open to meet with us prior, and of course Val, our wonderful, amazing and talented photographer.”

“Val, we can’t thank you enough and anybody looking for a photographer need look no further. The way you made everyone feel comfortable and excited to be part of our day was incredible. The photos you took to capture those special moments are beautiful and we can’t thank you enough for being there for us and with us. We appreciate your professionalism, artistry and energy more than you can imagine!”
